a transplant to a new city may see that place with new, bright eyes, and, without her former life, may see her past as a time frozen forever as an autumn leaf preserved in the golden silence of amber

  • The New Girl in St. Louis: The Insider's Secret City
I relocated to St. Louis in August of 2007, and being the crazy romantic that I am, began a strange love affair with this city. Distantly related to T.S. Eliot, I took comfort and inspiration from his words: "It is self-evident that St. Louis affected me more deeply than any other environment has ever done. I feel that there is something in having passed one's childhood beside the big river, which is incommunicable to those people who have not. I consider myself fortunate to have been born here, rather than in Boston, or New York, or London." Please forgive the resultant musings on this both brutal and kind gateway city, as well as the foresight it has inspired in me on my own past.
